La maison du gardien du phare de l'île Louët
A jewel in the Bay of Morlaix, just a few metres from the Château du Taureau and 350 metres from the coast of Carantec, Ile Louët has been synonymous with adventure and a change of scenery for many future Robinsons for the past 11 years!
The former lighthouse keeper’s house was turned into an unusual gîte in 2008 by the municipality of Carantec, and every year it welcomes guests for one or two nights from April to early November. Back to basics, respect for nature, simple and discreet comfort…
A little background: the Île Louët lighthouse was built in 1857 by the engineer Fenoux. Its purpose was to ensure safe access for ships to the port of Morlaix by means of permanent lighting, and it was inhabited by a succession of keepers and their families until the 1960s, when the lighthouse was automated.
In 2004, the town of Carantec decided to refurbish the keeper’s house in agreement with the Lighthouses and Beacons Service, which owned the house and the lighthouse. The aim was to “make the site accessible to all, reveal its identity and protect its resources”.
The renovation of the house and its outbuildings to a modest standard of comfort, in keeping with the spirit of the island, means that this magical place is now open to the general public.
The house is a gîte that can accommodate up to 10 people in simple but complete comfort. There are 3 bedrooms in the house (2 for 2 and 1 for 4) and a mezzanine bedroom in the roadman’s workshop.
Only the house, its terrace, the toilets in the “fisherman’s shed” and the toilets in the former “pigsty” are rented out. Despite this, the island has always been and remains a public space accessible to all.
